First, my debut post over at Hammer & Beyond is now live.
It concerns the great Herman Cohen, the maverick US oddball let loose on the sensibilities of the British horror film from the late fifties until the early seventies, and producer of such titles as Horrors of the Black Museum, Konga and Berserk!
You can read it here.
Second, thanks very much indeed to TheAnswerMVP2001 at Common Sense Movie Reviews for bestowing upon Carfax Abbey its second Kreativ Blogger Award. Not only is he an ace film reviewer and James Bond fanatic, he's also a big fan of Rachel Stevens, which is A-OK at the Abbey.
The rules for accepting the award are as follows:
.
1. Thank the person who nominated you for this award.
2. Copy the logo and place it on your blog.
3. Link to the person who nominated you for this award.
4. Name 7 things about yourself that people might find interesting.
5. Nominate 7 Kreativ Bloggers.
6. Post links to the 7 blogs you nominate
7. Leave a comment on each of the blogs letting them know they have been nominated.
.
Well, that's 1-3 already done, and I'm going to hold off on 5-7 for the moment, as there are a number of new, or just new to me, blogs that I will soon be highlighting in a separate post at our sister site Movietone News, so I shall wait until then before handing on the award.
So that just leaves number 4: seven things about me you might find interesting, or as I prefer to call it: seven things you might or might not find interesting...
.
1. I once sold a gardening book to Paul McCartney.
2. I live in the same street as the police station used in the sitcom Porridge.
3. I read paperback novels in the bath bought cheap especially for the purpose; I have several copies of Peter Benchley's Jaws on standby because I read it in the bath once a year.
4. I've played piano in a whorehouse. Actually that's one of Harpo Marx's claims to fame on the back of Harpo Speaks... Harpo Speaks is my favourite book. If I could save only one book from the the cataclysm that destroys the earth it would be Harpo Speaks.
5. My favourite place in the world is Florence, Italy.
6. My fictional heroes are Ignatius J. Reilly in A Confederacy of Dunces and Seymour in Ghost World.
7. I am convinced that when people say Roger Moore is not their favourite Bond they are joking.
.
And lastly, here's advance warning of The Great Lugosi at Monogram Marathon, to which you are all most heartily invited as participants. The rules are simple. Get as many of Lugosi's Monogram movies as you can and watch them back to back, without breaking for anything other than natural necessities, making notes of your impressions as you go.
If you feel you have the courage to attempt such a foolhardy venture do please join me in doing so, and then let me know how it was for you once the red mist clears.
You will need:
.
1. As many Lugosi Monogram films as you can lay your hands on. (Damn you if you have a copy of Return of the Ape Man!)
1. As many Lugosi Monogram films as you can lay your hands on. (Damn you if you have a copy of Return of the Ape Man!)
2. A steely nerve.
3. Roughly 700 cl of good gin - I recommend Gordon's London.
4. Sympathetic girlfriends/ boyfriends/ spouses/ housemates/ neighbours.
5. The kind of temperament with regard to low-budget horror movies that sees opportunities missed as, in some perverse way, opportunities taken.
.
See you on the other side!

First of all congratulations on the piece you wrote for Hammer and Beyond. It is a fantastic overview that I thoroughly enjoyed reading.
A Bela Lugosi Monogram Marathon? Ooooh, you're a better man than me. Most of the ones that I have so far seen do not tempt me much to go and revisit them. I think there's about 3, maybe 4 that I am not familiar with and may just venture out and check them out, too. Though I doubt I'll manage more than one or two in one sitting. I think most of those films are freely available through archive.org which should make it easy to check them out.
